Managing Projects & Start-ups
Specializing in managing projects that support healthy communities and at-risk populations. Work has included focus groups, community-based plans, state and local board leadership, feasibility studies, pilot program development and implementation. Clients include Polk County Health Department, Lutheran Services in Iowa, Eat Greater Des Moines, AARP, Iowa Department on Aging, and Des Moines Area Religious Council.
Successful implementation of new businesses and programs includes the Iowa Food Coop, Iowa Food Systems Council Board, Lutheran Services Refugee Incubator Farm Program, Eat Greater Des Moines, Local Food Box Program, HOQ Restaurant, and Pantry 2.0 NutriScore™ Point System.
Nutrition Education, Food Sourcing & Preparation
Using science-based nutrition information to educate individuals and small groups on healthy eating including choices based on food sources, growing methods, and preparation techniques. Experience includes consulting with farm-to-table restaurants, athletes, growing organic produce for sale to local restaurants and coops, writing cookbooks, and coursework completion at Florence Italy Culinary Arts Institute, Cork College, and Ballymaloe Cookery School in Ireland.
Grant Writing & Grant Management
Focusing on grant opportunities that fund food, nutrition and health initiatives, applications have included USDA Community Food Project, Specialty Crop Block Grants, Value Added Producer Grants, USDA Local Food Promotion Program, Solid Waste Alternative Program Grant, Rural Business Enterprise Grants, Wellmark MATCH Grant, Iowa West Foundation, and Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines IGNITE Grant.
